CHALLENGE
Consumers are increasingly skeptical natural product’s effectiveness due to conflicting information on social media. Tom’s of Maine needs to communicate why it’s product is more effective and good for you. Claiming to be natural isn’t enough. Tom’s of Maine needed to stand out without loosing what make’s Tom’s of Maine unique-effective natural products that is good for people, the community and the environment.
EMPOWERING THE "HEATH CONSCIENTIOUS" SEEKER
During our deep dive into consumer insights, I had a definitive "A-ha" moment: I realized I was exactly the consumer the brand needed to capture. While I may not fit the traditional natural user profile, I represent the health conscientious seeker who cares about their well being and the environment and want products that align with their values. They want products that is effective and natural.
CURRENT OMNI CHANNEL BRAND EXPRESSION
DESIGN OBSERVATION 1: RECLAIMING BRAND PROPRIETY
Our initial audit revealed that the brand’s visual expression and tone of voice had become generic within the category. Beyond the "teal" color equity and the logo, the brand lacked a distinct POV on nature, resulting in a "category-standard" look and tone that failed to differentiate.
DESIGN OBSERVATION 2: BRIDGING THE STYLISTIC GAP
Our assessment identified a significant stylistic fragmentation in how the brand manifested across different touchpoints. This lack of a unified visual language created a "stylistic gap," resulting in a disjointed consumer experience and a dilution of brand equity.
DESIGN OBSERVATION 3: BALANCING UNITY WITH UTILITY
Our portfolio audit revealed a high degree of communication fragmentation between the Oral Care and Personal Care categories. The brand lacked a cohesive architecture, forcing each category to operate in a silo and weakening the overall brand impact across omni channel experiences.
THE STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK: BALANCING EVOLUTION & REVOLUTION
I translated my core insights into a high-impact creative brief, establishing a rigorous framework for our agency partner. My objective was to direct an expansive creative exploration that prioritized both brand preservation and market-share growth.
Strategic Ambition: I challenged the agency to deliver a "Bold but Grounded" solution. The creative had to act as a catalyst to attract the Conscientious Health Seeker while maintaining the "Visual Equity" required to retain our loyal, long-term consumer base.
Balanced Methodology: I architected a process that harmonized high-level strategic thinking with tactical execution. This ensured that our boldest creative ideas were always anchored in the commercial realities of the CPG landscape.
Agency Stewardship: By providing clear guardrails based on my observation I empowered the agency to explore a wide creative spectrum while ensuring every route remained fundamentally true to the brand’s soul
FISCAL STEWARDSHIP: INSTITUTIONALIZING DESIGN BUDGET GOVERNANCE
Large-scale transformations often carry inherent financial variables. To mitigate risk and ensure a sustainable "runway" for the project’s evolution, I established a Quarterly Fiduciary Discipline—a strategic financial audit bridging Design, Marketing, and Finance.
Cross-Functional Visibility: I institutionalized a quarterly review process that provided stakeholders with total transparency into design spend, transforming the budget from a static spreadsheet into a dynamic tool for decision-making.
Strategic Prioritization: These sessions fostered a critical dialogue regarding project scope and resource allocation. By aligning spend with business priorities, we were able to pivot quickly and protect the project’s critical path.
Operational Rigor: This disciplined approach eliminated financial "surprises" and built high-level confidence across the organization, proving that world-class design can—and should—operate with the same fiscal rigor as any other business function.
